Drive Assembly

This is a small collection of pictures during the assembly of the drive.

Construction of the maingear started with finding an appropriate sized gear. I then cut the center out of it and filled it with resin. Next I built up a support for the sweeps and made a mold form it. The white gear is the original, the black one is the first casting.

The first casting with holes drilled for the sweep arms, and the sweep arms installed.

After looking ate several pictures of old carousels, I decided to go with a drive assembly I saw on an old Looff carousel. The vertical drive shaft was mounted off of the main pole and was turned by a flywheel and electric motor.

What can I say, I needed an old looking flywheel, so time to build, mold, and cast one. This is the first casting out of the mold.

Here's the flywheel in it's spot with the gearing mocked up and transmiting rotational force to the pinion. I really need to get a camera with the ability to shoot close-ups.

A close up of the flywheel, cradle, and bevel gears. Over all not a difficult set up.
