Ok, so I decided to see how the casting material machines BEFORE I start on the main casting. The muffler castings
seem like a nice place to start, so that what I'm going to do. As a note, did I mention how nice the castings are to begin with?
As always, click on the photo for a larger version.

The castings that is cut off of the main body is chucked up in the 3 jaw
The end is cut to give a smooth surface for about a half inch of material. Now I can take a measurement and figure out how much needs to be turned off.
The exposed half inch of material is turned to the overall outter diameter, and the the projection is turned to its diameter and depth.
Parting off the head with about .100" extra to be faced back smooth.
The parted off piece is turned and mounted on the projection, then faced back to proper thickness
I also center drilled it to give me a referance spot for ball milling the relief while everything is co-centric
